6.Not A Small Promblem

Mr. Guppy was a very large man. He had a loud voice and a bad temper. He was not a giant, but he was much bigger than most men.

Life was not easy for Mr. Guppy. He could seldom find clothes big eno ugh. His feet were too large for most shoes. In buses, trains and pla nes, he could not stand up straight. The roofs were too low.

In cars he could not move his legs. There was not eno ugh room. At home, his bed was too short.

Chairs were always too small. In fact, wherever he went and whatever he did, Mr. Guppy had problems because of his size.

These problems were so bad that

Guppy stayed at home most of the time. Life was easier at home.

Then one day, a frie nd said, \"You spe nd too much time at home. You should go out more. There's a good movie at the theater.\" \"I can't sit in theater seats,\" Mr. Guppy said. \"I'm too big.\" \"That is no problem,\" his friend said. \"I'll buy you two tickets. You can get them at the theater whe n you go.\" The friend sent money to the theater for two tickets. When the day came, Mr. Guppy put on his best clothes and went to the theater.

\"You have two tickets for me,\" he said to the woman in the ticket office. \"My n ame is Guppy.\"

\"Oh, yes, Mr. Guppy,\" the woman said. \"Here you are, seats G4 and P12. I'm sorry, you and your frie nd can't sit together because we are very full this eve nin g.\"

Poor Mr. Guppy. He smiled sadly, walked out of the theater and went home.

ADJ. + ENOUGH; TOO + ADJ.; NOT + ENOUGH + NOUN

请看下列在故事中出现的短语: Big eno ugh Not eno ugh room

too large too small Too low Too short Too big

与big enough意思相反的是not enough。否定词not放在形容词前面。如: The motorcycle was big eno ugh for two people. The motorcycle was not big eno ugh for three people.

与 too big 相反的 too small 与 too short 相反的 too tall 与too low 相反的 too high ,

与too big 含义相反的还可用not too big 来表示,否定词not放在too前面 与eno ugh room 含义相反的是 not eno ugh room, 否定词 not 放在 en ough前面,如果有动词的话也放在动词前面。如: Mr. Guppy had eno ugh room.

Mr. Guppy did n't have eno ugh room.

注意:room在这里是不可数名词。意味“空间” “空余之地”
