The Man of Many Secrets — Harry Houdini — was one of the greatest American entertainers in the theater this century. He was a man famous for his escapes — from prison cells, from wooden boxes floating in rivers, from locked tanks full of water. He appeared in theaters all over Europe and America. Crowds came to see the great Houdini and his “magic” tricks.
Of course, his secret was not magic or supernatural powers. It was simply strength. He had the ability to move his toes as well as he moved his fingers. He could move his body into almost any position he wanted.
Houdini started working in the entertainment world when he was 17, in 1891. He and his brother Theo performed card tricks in club in New York. They called themselves the Houdini Brothers. When Harry married in 1894, he and his wife Bess worked together as magician and
assistant. But for a long time they were not very successful. Then Harry performed his first prison escape, in Chicago in 1898. Harry persuaded a detective to let him try to escape from the prison, and he invited the local newspapermen to watch.
It was the publicity that came from this that started Harry Houdini’s success. Harry had fingers trained to escape from handcuffs and toes trained to escape ankle chins. But his biggest secret was how he unlocked the prison doors. Every time he went into the prison cell, Bess gave him a kiss for good luck — and a small skeleton key, which is a key that fits many locks, pass quickly from her mouth to his.
Harry used these prison escapes to build his fame. He arranged to escape from the local prison of every town he visited. In the afternoon, the people of the town would read about it in their local newspapers, and in the evening every seat in the local theater would be full. What was the result? World-wide fame and a name remembered today.
21. According to the passage, Houdini’s success in prison escapes depends on _______.
A. his special tricks and supernatural powers B. his unusual ability and a skeleton key C. his magic tricks and unhuman powers D. his wisdom and magic tricks
22. In the fourth paragraph, the underlined word “this” refers to _______.
A. his first prison escape B. the year 1898 C. the publicity D. Harry Houdini’s success 23. From the passage we can infer that Houdini became famous _______.
A. in 1894 B. before he married C. at the age of 17 D. when he was about 24

There could be an ocean’s worth of water more than 300 miles under the Earth’s surface that equals the known water content across the entire planet. Findings published in the latest issue of the journal, Nature show that water was found in a sample of ringwoodite, a stone formed under extreme pressure inside the Earth’s mantle (地幔).
The ringwoodite discovery was made by Professor Graham Pearson of the University of Alberta. When Pearson’s team examined a seemingly worthless brown diamond they had
uncovered, they found the ringwoodite sample within , which contained about 1.5 percent water.
However, Pearson and his team acknowledge that the finding, the first of its kind, does not completely settle the water theory. In an accompanying Nature article, University of Bayreuth geochemist, Hans Keppler, cautions that no firm conclusions can be made based on the single ringwoodite sample.Still, he writes that the most likely scenario does in fact point to large reservoirs of water trapped deep underground.
But Pearson himself is now convinced, telling the Edmonton Journal, “What you can definitely say from our finding is that there are oases of water — wet spots — in the deep Earth. Now if you extrapolate (推断)it to the whole of this area we call the transition zone, it means there might be the same mass of water as what is held in all of the world’ s oceans.”
If Pearson is correct, the presence of water deep beneath the Earth’s surface could help
scientists better understand the shifting of tectonic(地壳构造上的) plates, which may be thinned
♦
and corroded (侵蚀)by the existence of water. As to the existence of the ringwoodite sample itself, Pearson and his team say it was probably pushed to the Earth ’ s surface by a volcanic eruption.
So, where did all this water, if it actually exists, come from? Pearson says it may have been sucked down beneath the Earth ’ s surface as tectonic plates shifted.
28. According to the text, the water in the ringwoodite sample proves that ____ in the deep Earth. A. there are oceans of water
B. there are a lot of oases C. there are wet spots D. there are many diamonds 29. What can we learn from the text?
A. Ringwoodite samples can usually be found in brown diamonds.
B. The ringwoodite sample could help scientists better understand the shifting of tectonic
plates.
C. The ringwoodite sample was probably formed by a volcanic eruption. D. Whether the water theory is true remains to be proved. 30. Hans Keppler’ s attitude towards the water theory is______ . A. supportive B. objective C. cautious D. opposed 31. The water probably came from ___ if it actually exists.
A. rainwater accumulated for a long time
B. water pulled down when tectonic plates shifted
C. water pulled down during the formation of the desert D. water pulled down when earthquakes happened D
A shark’s skin is covered with tiny teeth or “denticles”(小齿) which aid swimming. Engineers have tried to mimic the roughness of shark skin when designing swimsuits and even racing cars. But the denticles have never been so well reproduced before, says a report in the Journal of Experimental Biology.
George Lauder and his colleagues took a detailed scan of a tiny square of skin from a mako shark, and built a 3D model of a single denticle, just 0.15mm long. The challenge was then to make a synthetic(合成的)skin. It took them about a year.
3D printing builds up new objects layer by layer, following a computer-generated design. To print the shark skin, the scientists had to use two different materials for the hard, tooth-like structures and for the flexible base ---much like the different colored inks used to print a picture. The particular shape of the denticles also posed difficulties: “Because they’re overhung(悬臂式的), the 3D printers have to print a supporting material, which you then have to remove” Professor Lauder told the BBC. “It took a while to work out all the tricks.”
The artificial skin has impressed Oliver Crimmen, a fish expert at the Natural History Museum who has previously advised Speedo on swimsuit design. “I used to think: how on earth would you mimic that complex structure accurately?” he said. “3D printing is it ---what a wonderful application for it.”
Because the resolution (分辨率)of even the latest 3D printers is limited, the artificial denticles are about 10 times larger than the real ones seen on the skin of a mako shark. Nevertheless, when the team stuck the new artificial skin onto a small, flexible paddle (桨) and studied it in a water tank, they were able to see the benefit that sharks get from their unusual scales. A paddle with the new, toothy skin delivered a boost of up to 6.6% in swimming speed, compared to one coated with the smooth skin alone. The artificial denticles also allowed the paddle to travel the same simulated distance while using 5.9% less energy. “That’s a huge effect, when factored over the entire lifetime of an animal that is constantly swimming.”said Professor Lauder.
32. What does the underlined word “mimic” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Understand B. Study C. Imitate D. Produce 33.The third paragraph is mainly about the _____ .
A. advantages of 3D printing technology
B. materials used for the tooth-like structures and the flexible base C. choices of the colors used in printing the denticles
D. challenges and difficulties researchers faced when doing the research 34. According to the last paragraph, the paddle with the toothy skin ____.
A. was ten times smaller than the real one
B. had an increase of over 5.9% in swimming speed C. was more flexible than the one with smooth skin
D. used less energy compared with the smoothy one over the same simulated distance 35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. 3D printing reveals the benefits of shark skin.
B. An introduction to the shark’s advantages in the ocean. C. The special function of sharks’ teeth in their daily life. D. Scientists have built a 3D model of a shark. 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Being a Popular Student
We all hope to be popular with our classmates and teachers. To enjoy popularity, we are supposed to regard the class as our big family and even offer to sacrifice our personal interests whenever necessary. While taking an active part in all our class activities, we should work responsibly to build up a good reputation as a team.
To be students with high popularity, we are to show respect, concern and sympathy for others. As a result, we never hesitate to lend a hand to those in need.
To be a popular student, we ought to be strict with ourselves in everything we do at school and make every effort to achieve all-round development, being good not only at our lessons but also at sports, music, painting, social services and so on. In time of success we remain modest, while in time of difficulty we keep strong-minded.
All in all, popularity among classmates and teachers comes naturally to those who keep improving their personal qualities.
