PREREQUISITES:
1.Students should read Texts A for the main idea before they come to the class sessions.
2.Some type of audio player should be furnished in class, at least for the first period of instruction. 3.Tapes of the listening material should be available during class hours.
4.Test B should be used for class reading activities. Students should not read Text B before they come to class. Proposed Unit Duration: 8 class hours (45 minutes each)
Section A The Letter
I. Pre-reading Questions:
1. Are you and your middle school classmates still writing to each other now? Why? 2. How do you feel when you haven’t heard from you old friend for long? 3. What will you write in your letter to your best friend? II. Coprehension of the text
Ss are given 5 minutes to scan the text quickly and finish the comprehension part in Page 70. III. Free-writing Task
1. Ss are given ten minutes to list five things they most want to share with their best friend whom they haven’t seen for a long time.
2. Ss exchange their papers with at least three fellow Ss. 3. T asks several Ss to report to class what they have written.
4. T may move on to Text A by saying: “There will be a lot of things that could be shared with friends. Let’s see what happened between Tom and Ed.” IV. Whlile-reading tasks
1. T asks Ss to survey the text within five minutes and find out the main idea; 2. Background material:
Christmas: an annual Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Most members the Roman Catholic Church and followers of Protestantism celebrate Christmas on December 25, and many celebrate on the evening of December 24 as well. The most important holiday on the Christian calendar is Easter, which commemorates the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. Nevertheless, many people, particularly in the United States and Canada, consider Christmas to be the most significant annual Christian event. In addition to being a religious holiday, Christmas is a widely observed secular festival. For most people who celebrate Christmas, the holiday season is characterized by gathering among families and friends, feasting and gift giving.

Language Points 1 I had to pound on the taxi to get his attention. (Para. 1) pound on: hit or beat sth. many times 敲击;拍击 Great waves pounded on the rocks. 巨浪拍击岩石。 He pounded on the table with his fist. Language Point 2 “I’m in no hurry,” I told him. (Para. 4) 1) in no hurry: not needing to do things quickly. We were in no hurry, so we stopped to admire the view. 2) unwilling I’m in no hurry to see him again. 我不愿再见到他。 Compare: in a hurry 匆忙;乐意地 Don’t call a meeting in a hurry if the preparations are not completed. 如果没有准备好就不要急于开会。 She says she is not in hurry to leave this happy world. 她说她不想离开幸福的人间。 Language Point 3 “This isn’t family,” he replied. “Although… come to think of it, he might just as well have been a regular member of the family…(Para. 7) Meaning: “This letter isn't from my family,” he answered. “Although… I think he should have been an actual member of the family…” come to think of it: suddenly remember or realize sth. 想起来了 Come to think of it, I should write home today. might just as well: have no strong reason not to 最好还是;还是以……为好 There is nothing worth watching on the television, we we might just as well go to bed. 没什么值得可看的电视节目,我们还是睡觉吧。 Note: Sometimes “might” has less possibility than “may”, but these two words can often express the same meanings: I may/might see you tonight; I don’t know yet. 我今晚可能来看你但目前还不敢肯定。 Language Point 4 …we rode on in silence for a few minutes. (Para. 13) in silence: without any sound I can work only in complete silence. Language Point 5 Then he spoke again, almost more to himself than to me…(Para. 13) Meaning: Then he spoke again and I felt he was saying something to himself rather than to me. Language Point 6 I should have kept in touch with. (Para. 13) keep in touch: continue to have contact with sb. Are you still keep in touch with Tom? Language Point 7
We should all keep in touch with old friends more than we do. But things come up and we just don’t seem to find the time. (Para. 14) Meaning: we should all write to old friends more often than we do. But we have many unexpected things to do and we don’t seem to have time to write to them. Language Point 8 He handed it over to me. (Para. 15) hand…over to: give…to 交给 That thief was handed over to the police. Language Point 9 The first sentence reminded me of myself…(Para. 18) remind sb. of: cause sb. to remember You remind me of your father. Language Point 10 It referred to many things that had happened…(Para. 18) refer to: mention or talk about提及;谈到 When I said some people were stupid, I wasn’t referring to you! Language Point 11 Your friendship over the years has really meant a lot to me, more than I can say because I’m not good at saying things like that. (Para. 21) Meaning: Your friendship over the years has really been important to me, beyond what I can say because I find it hard to put my feelings into words. mean a lot to sb.: be important to sb. 对某人很重要 Your friendship means a lot to me. This job means a lot to me. Language Point 12 I found myself nodding in agreement. (Para. 21) in agreement: in the state of having the same opinion or purpose He nodded in agreement with me.
VII. Spotlight on Grammar: The structure of more…than/more than without a comparative clause
(1) Then he spoke again, almost more to himself than to me…(Passage A, Unit 4)
(2) And I learned that people all over the world are more the same than they are different. (Passage A, Unit 3)
上面例(1)中的more to himself than to me意为“与其说是对我说,不如说是对他自己说”,例(2)中的more the same than they are different意为“共同点大于不同点”。
这种more A than B的结构通常用在不包括比较分句的句子中,其意义通常是肯定A,否定B,即相当于“与其说是B,不如说是A”。有时也可对A和B的程度进行比较,即:“A的程度大于B”。这种more…than的结构可用来连接主语补语,如下例(1);状语,如下例(2)等句子成分。
(1) He is more a businessman than a professor.
I was more angry than worried when they didn’t come back. She was more moved than pleased when she got his gift. Steven is more an actor than a teacher. Steven is more smart than hardworking. Jeff was more a master than a servant.
(2) He did it more for himself than for anybody else.
I teach more for fun than for a living.
She read the text more carefully than slowly. I walked more hurriedly than quickly.
注:当more用在形容词或副词前面是,不管该形容词或副词是单音节、双音节或多音节,都不能改成-er的形式。例如:
He is more big than strong. [误] He is bigger than strong.
Steven is more smart than hardworking. [误] Steven is smarter than hardworking.
此外,more than也可用于不带比较分句的句子中,作“不只是”讲,后面跟名词短语,如下例(1);动词短语,如下例(2);如形容词短语,如下例(3)。
(1) I like more than music.
Shakespeare has written more than Hamlet. His trip to America was more than sightseeing.
Teaching in a university is more than giving lectures.
Learning English is more than attending the classes and taking notes; you are learning another
culture!
(2) We more than waited from morning till night. She more than suffered from the disease.
He more than scolded me; he told me what to do next. James more than shouted; he threw the glass at the waiter. (3) She was more than glad to hear the news.
His house is more than large and beautiful; it is surrounded by trees. I was more than frightened when I saw the terrible man. The jokes you told me the other day are more than funny.
