“Once there was a ship travelling on the tough sea and on the ship there was a pair of couple. All of a sudden, the ship met with an accident and the couple had no choice but to run to the life boat without delay. After reaching there, they realized that there was space only for one person. At that very moment, the husband pushed his wife behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself, leaving his wife standing on the sinking ship, shouting something desperately to her husband eyes filled with tears.”
The teacher stopped her story-telling and asked her students, “Guys, guess what it was that she shouted.”
Most students answered. “I hate you!”
After listening to all this reply, the teacher glanced through the whole class again and noticed that there was a boy sitting silently throughout. Then she asked him the same question.
The boy answered, “I believe she would have shouted-Take care of our child.”
Listening to his remarks, the teacher was surprised and asked the boy doubtfully. “Have you heard of this story before?”
Shaking his head, the boy said softly and sadly, “No, I haven’t. But that’s what my mother said to my father before she died of a deadly disease.”
Moved and feeling sad, the teacher replied. “Your answer is absolutely right!”
Then she continued, “Let’s take up the story. The ship sank eventually and the husband went home and brought up their daughter alone. Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter was tidying up all his belongings when she found his diary. In his diary she found that when her parents were on the ship, her mother had already been diagnosed (诊断) with advanced illness and at the critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival.”

A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into the neighbourhood, I couldn't imagine who it would be. Opening the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.
\"Can I help you?\" I asked.
\"Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?\" his blue eyes were hopeful.
\"Are they from your garden?\" I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some
carrots with soil.
\"Yes,\" his voice was soft. \"And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too?\"
My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of the bit of money. With a sigh, I said, \"Please step inside and I'll get my money.\"
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. \"Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for tea?\" Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several bruised (擦伤的) apples. \"From my tree,\" he said, removing a worn cap. \"You might like to make a pie.\"
The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was obvious that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending questions. \"What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?\"
The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years ago, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him that day.

It had been one of those days when nothing goes right. I was due at work at 8 o’clock, but I was ten minutes late because I overslept. I went straight to my regular post – the toy department. It was two days before Christmas and the department was a mess. It caused me to think back to the time when I enjoyed Christmas. That was two years ago, before I went work here.
Somehow since that time, Christmas didn’t mean much anymore, except more work and headaches. The whole day, I was cursed, yelled at and stepped on. And I still had to finish my Christmas shopping that evening. I had just finished explaining to a man why we didn’t sell firecrackers, when I felt a tug on my arm.
It was one of the two kids I had been keeping an eye on for a while --- security told us to watch kids for stealing. He and his little sister had been looking at the “discount” counter, where we had all the cheapest toys. Before I even bent down to listen to him, I checked around for his sister. I didn’t see her.
“Mister, do you think this would be a good present for my little sister?” he said in a broken accent, holding up a bottle of soap bubble liquid. “I don’t want her to know about it,” he whispered before I could even answer.
I just agreed with him. He stuck his hand in the pocket of his dirty jeans and pulled out a fistful of change, asking if he had enough money to pay for it. “It looks like you’ll have to try to find something else,” I said. “You need ten more
cents.” I doubted it was a trick, especially at Christmas. He looked sad and went back to find something else.
I watched him from the corner of my eye for a while as he looked at other items, but always came back to the soap bubbles. I left the area for a few minutes and when I came back he was still there, trying to find a cheaper gift. Somehow, the kid struck me as different from most the troublemakers we got in the toy department.

My best friend's mother was a social worker in Detroit, Michigan. Because of that, my friend Victoria and I were introduced early to the world of volunteering.
We did plenty of charity(慈善) work. We always had a good time, and continued to volunteer whenever we had time, often even when we didn't. It became second nature. Hairstyles came and went, but Victoria and I found places to donate our time because that's how we were raised.
One particular morning we signed up for “Paint the Town”, an organization in Detroit to help low-income homeowners clean their houses. We were assigned(分配) a dilapidated(破烂的) house in one of the worst communities of the city. I was afraid as we got near to the front door, not knowing who we would find on the other side. We knocked three times quickly and stepped back, waiting to be let in.
When the door opened, my mouth did, too. Standing there was a little old lady with wisps(一束) of white hair and a purple apron(围裙) tied around her waist.
“Hello,” she said, “I'm Amelia. Please come in and I will show you where to
start.” Her smile shone brightly. “I am just baking some cookies for you girls to eat.”
As she led us to the parts of her house that needed painting, my heart softened. Here was one of the scariest-looking houses in the city, but behind its doors was a sweet old lady with a cane and a big smile.
Here we were coming to help her, and instead she was doing something for us—baking homemade cookies and serving us tea!

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought noticing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out?
Earlier that week I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, “This looks really easy for you. Why aren’t you applying to-become a guard?”
“The thought hadn’t crossed my mind.”
\"Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class.”
Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me — You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.
Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. A well-intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

1.答案:
In his diary, the man mentioned he wished to sink to the ocean with his wife but for their daughter he had to live. Without him, their baby daughter would become an orphan. After drowning himself in sorrow for a short time, he uplifted himself and learned how to raise baby. Whenever faced with hardships, he would inspire himself with his wife’ words—“Take care of our child.” Seeing the little
girl grow into a sunny, pretty girl with double love from both parents, the man knew he made it to keep his promise.
The story was finished and the class was silent. Nobody talked or laughed as usual. Instead, it seemed that every student was lost in deep thought, tasting the moving life story. The teacher was sure that the students were reflecting on their replies and that they had understood the moral of the story. Of the Good and Evil in this world, there are hidden secrets behind them. So we should not really focus on the surface and judge anyone without understanding them first. Put yourself in others’ shoes and then you can really understand their behavior.
如:be faced with;take care of;make it;keep one’s promise;reflect on;focus on;put oneself in others’ shoes等固定短语。①Seeing the little girl grow into a sunny, pretty girl with double love from both parents, the man knew he made it to keep his promise.中使用了现在分词seeing作状语;②The teacher was sure that the students were reflecting on their replies and that they had understood the moral of the story.
2.答案:
Paragraph 1:
When he finished the tea, he said he had to go home and promised to return the next day. Making his way to the door, he turned and waved us goodbye. My daughter excitedly waited for his visit and made full preparations. As the old man visited us the next day and entered the kitchen, he was amazed by all of the preparations for him, including apple pies. His eyes were filled with tears. We became friends and enjoyed the company this old visitor offered us. Later on, we
kept in touch by writing letters, for he had become too old to get around.
Paragraph 2:
Several years later, a small envelope was delivered to our home----a letter from the old man's daughter. She informed us that our dear old friend had passed away. \"I'm so grateful for your showing care for my father,\" she wrote. \"I can see how much you meant to him. Here is a letter from my father to you.\" The letter goes like this, \"Thank you for all your kindnesses to an old man. When I was lonely, you took me in. When I was badly in need of a family, you accepted me. My last few years are filled with happiness because of you.\"
3.答案:
I went over to him and asked if he had found any thing yet. He just shook his head and looked very disappointed. “Well, let’s see how much money you have again,” I said. He dumped the change in with the two dimes I had concealed in my hand. “Well, look it here!” I said, “I must have counted wrong before –you have just enough for those soap bubbles.” His smile spread out to his ears again, and he headed for the checkouts.
I followed him secretly to what he really spent the money on. He went through the line with the one item and a smile, then met his sister outside. He kept the bag tightly clenched in his fist so his sister couldn’t see what he had bought for her with his last pennies. Somehow the rest of the day went much better, and when I
went to buy Christmas presents that night I looked for gifts instead of obligations. For the first time in three years I had Christmas spirit again, but I got some really odd looks from my family when I came home with soap bubbles.
4.答案:
There was no age barrier that day as we worked on Amelia's house. Amelia stayed close by, talking to us as we painted, telling us about her native Ireland and how she came to Detroit. I felt so sad for her living in such a poor part of the neighborhood with no one to keep her company. When I told her so, she laughed at me.
“Nonsense!” she criticized( 批评). “This is my house even if it is falling down around me. I feel blessed that you girls came to help fix it up. I'm happy here. I've watched the neighborhood change, and seen people come and go, but I always stay. We may all be different on the outside, but on the inside, we are all just after the same thing—community. Keep it up. Nothing will make you happier than helping other people.”What she said to me replayed itself as I volunteered in different parts of the town.
5.答案:
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. Sure enough, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands desperately. I quickly dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I
reached him, he had sunk to the bottom of the pool, his head hanging down, which filled my heart with fright and concern. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. I could tell he had no heartbeat and wasn’t breathing. Every second counted! Without hesitation, I did first aid, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as trained. Other guards watching anxiously, I carried on, sweating. Suddenly, a stream of water burst out of his mouth and the boy coughed intensely. Seeing the boy regain consciousness, those around broke into cheers. Exhausted, I sighed with relief. I thought had I accepted that easy position, I would have been nothing but a bystander. I’m happy I didn’t take the easy way out.
解析:
根据给出的第一段开头的 “Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. ”和第二段开头所给句子“Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck.” 根据给出的第二段开头的“Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck.”
最初时我选择“take the easy way out”,另找了一份简单的工作。
