(1) An Embarrassing Day In my second year of senior high school, I used to walk home with my best friends. One day, Jack suggested that we take a shortcut to save a ten-minute walk. It meant that we had to jump over a wall. All my friends immediately agreed because it was a hot summer day, and all of us wanted to get home as soon as possible. Everybody successfully jumped over the wall. I was no exception, but suddenly I heard a splitting sound and found that my pants were torn apart. The hole was too big to be covered with my school bag. All I could do was pretend that nothing had happened. Yet, to my greatest embarrassment, I ran into a girl that I admired. She burst out laughing when she discovered what had happened to me. What an embarrassing day it was! (144 words; 11 complete sentences) (2) A Misunderstanding I once had a big misunderstanding with my close friend, Sandy. We were twelve at the time and living in a small neighborhood. She was my next door neighbor, and we always went to school together. But one day, she refused to go with me. While in school, she did not talk to me. What was worse, she seemed to ignore me completely. After several days, I wrote a letter to her and also tried to call her, but both efforts were in vain. She just threw my letter away and turned off her cellphone. Then, I talked to other friends and realized that Sandy thought I had revealed her secrets. In fact, I was not the one to blame. One of our classmates had overheard us and made Sandy’s secrets public. I visited her later that day and explained everything to her. We finally made up. (147 words; 13complete sentences)

(3) Growing Up Is A Happy Experience When I look back on my early childhood, I can remember how happy I was. My family lived in the country where there were many green trees and spongy grass. I could watch the white clouds and flying birds in the blue sky in the morning, and at night I usually could see myriads of stars sparkling in the vast sky. In summer I used to play happily together with the neighboring children in the brook or at the riverside. In the rest of the year we often played with leaves, marbles, stones, beetles, and many other things from nature. Although sometimes I was called down by my loving parents for fear that I might get hurt or run wild, I really had a good time in my childhood. Until now, these interesting and sweet memories still make me feel happy. Whenever I am upset or discouraged, I always think of the good old days. I was lucky enough to have grown up in such a carefree and happy environment. ( 170 words) Growing Up Is A Happy Experience Looking back on my past, I clearly remember how happy I was in my childhood. I kept a dog as a pet. It was a good-looking dog by the name of Joe. Father bought it for me as a birthday gift when I was five. Every early morning, he made noise to wake me up. In the evening, he wagged his tail to welcome me home. And he liked to lie beside my feet and kept me company while I was watching TV. On holidays, my father and I liked to take a walk with him. He added a lot of fun to my life. Best of all, he guarded our house well. Ever since we kept it, we had never worried about thieves. Because of him, I really had a happy time in my childhood. I was lucky enough to have grown up with such a loyal “friend.” (149 words) 2

Growing Up Is A Happy Experience Looking back on my childhood, I can still remember how happy I was. My family lived in the countryside. The scenery was very beautiful and there were a lot of green trees. In summer, I used to play with the neighboring children in the stream leisurely. We put some paper ships on the water and saw which one went faster. We always went swimming happily at the riverside. And once in a while we were caught in a shower, not being in time to take shelter. Undoubtedly, I was inevitably called down by my loving parents. But, indeed, I had a good time in my childhood. Whenever I think of the good old days, it seems that I can get away from it all for a while. When tired from my schoolwork, I also think of these days. In no time, I find myself refreshed and ready to hit the books again. Growing up is really a happy experience. (159 words) Growing Up Is An Exciting Experience When I was just a little girl, I was innocently convinced that life was a bed of roses. However, as time flies, I regard life as a series of challenges. And growing up is just like an exciting combat. Looking back on my past, I remember I encountered many frustrations. Each of them was an opportunity for me to learn how to face the ups and downs in my life. Although born into a poor family, I don’t take poverty as a shame. On the contrary, the troubles resulting from poverty make me stick to my goal. In the process of growth, I have got more courageous to deal with the obstacles in my way. Whenever I solve a problem in my life, I become the victor in a war. In my opinion, growing up is like a fight. It is really an exciting experience. Growing Up Is A Confusing Experience A smile appeared in my childhood only once in a blue moon. Once a shy boy, I didn’t know how to express my emotion hidden in my mind profoundly, and not even to my parents. They were worried if I would be a guy with a sense of inferiority. The fact, however, was that I didn’t have a good ability to express myself. All I could do was talk with myself. I always asked myself, “Why am I here?” “Why do I have to study?” “What will I be?” Lots of questions race through my mind, but no one could give me a definite answer. So I really felt confused in my childhood and kept searching for an answer. Ultimately, when I grow up, I still haven’t got the answer. However, I come to realize that it is “search” more than anything else that can help me find the meaning of life. (152 words)

Growing Up Is A Painful Experience Looking back on my past, I can still get a dim glimpse of the painful life of a little shy girl longing to be loved and to explore the outside world. I was an ordinary girl, neither attractive in appearance nor outstanding in academic performances. Overshadowed by my smarter and prettier sister, who was always the center of attention, I was rather like a puppet, always silent and having no identity of my own. A sense of inferiority hinders me from expressing myself. I was too self-conscious to get along well with others. A weirdo in the eyes of other kids, I was more often than not excluded from social activities. My childhood was spent confining myself to my lonely world, feeling sorry for myself. Growing up is really a painful experience for me. If I could return to childhood again, I would be more confident in myself and learn to love myself in my own worth. (157 words) (4) A Tough Decision Life is always full of tough decisions. I once faced a difficult situation when I was a member of the Biology Club. Occupied with club affairs, I neglected my studies, and my grades went from bad to worse. My falling grades upset my parents, and they: insisted that I give up the club. This put me in the dilemma of choosing between school and club activities. I didn't want to quit the Biology Club, but I didn't want to disappoint my parents, either. After careful consideration, I decided to manage my time more wisely so that 1 could stay in the club. I made a point of studying at least two hours every day so I wouldn't lag behind in class. Things improved eventually and I was glad that I didn't give up. It was not easy, but learning to make a wise decision a precious experience. (147 words) The Hardest Decision I’ve Ever Made Life is full of difficult decisions, and the hardest one I’ve ever made was a matter of life and death. Blackie was my four-year-old dog that I had raised since she was just a puppy. Unfortunately, she had heartworms, and the vet said she was dying. Blackie was a great dog, but it was apparent that she was suffering. The vet suggested I put her to sleep.

I was at a loss when I heard this. I could not bear to see her in pain, but it was against my beliefs to kill anything. I felt helpless and asked my parents for advice. They said there was no such thing as a perfect answer, but they were sure I’d make the right decision. In the end, we put Blackie to sleep and were thankful for all the memories we shared with her. (142 words) (5) Seeing a Dentist The last thing I want to do is seeing a doctor, unless I get seriously ill. It is always an unpleasant experience whenever I go to see a doctor, especially a dentist. I remember when I was ten, one of my teeth got a big cavity. In the beginning, I felt just a little pain in the tooth but after a few days it hurt so much. Finally my mother had to take me to see a dentist. When I stepped into the clinic, I was scared to death because I heard another girl crying loudly in the clinic. My heart beat faster and faster when it was my turn, and I was too nervous to open my mouth in front of the dentist. I cried out loudly during the treatment and my mother had to hold me all the while. Finally the treatment was completed, and the doctor taught me how to brush my teeth correctly. He also threatened that I would have to see him once a week if I did not brush my teeth at least twice every day. Needless to say, I followed his instructions afterward. As the proverb goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” Since then, I have had no need to see a dentist because I always toke good care of my teeth. (219 words) 5
