1. Those words helped the young woman to see things more clearly. Maybe she couldn’t improve her circumstances, but she could improve herself. She made friends with her Native American neighbors, she began working with them on weaving and pottery, and she took time to explore the desert and discover its natural beauty.
2. Few things in life are more frustrating than being stuck in a profession or organization that doesn’t suit you. It’s like always having to wear shoes that are two sizes too large or too small. Are you a salesperson stuck in an accountant’s job? Are you a corporate executive who would rather be home raising your children? Are you an engineer who would rather be pastoring a church?

3. Successful executives have in common the ability to make weighty decisions based on limited amounts of information. But they also have in common the ability to gather reliable information to use as they evaluate issues. General Douglas MacArthur knew this. He asserted, “expect only 5 percent of an intelligence report to be accurate”.
4. The job of any good professor is to act as a guide and adviser, a facilitator to assist the student in realizing that there is much more to life than training for a particular career and then doing the same job each day for the next 40 years. A job alone, no matter how gratifying or financially rewarding, never will offer the type of “higher life” that Bloom envisions.
5. Knowing ancient philosophy may have little value in and of itself. However, when we juxtapose the ideas of Plato and Aristotle against our own, we begin to learn how different or similar we are to the ancient Greeks. At the same time, we

are able to gauge how much civilization has progressed or regressed during the past three millennia.
Ⅲ. Cloze test (10 points)
There are two factors which determine an individual’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born 1 . human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. 2 no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. so the second factor is what 3 to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is reared. If an individual is handicapped 4 , it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is 5 . The importance of environment determining an individual’s intelligence can be 6 by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and John. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in 7 foster homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational 8 . John, however, was educated in the home of well-to-do parents who has been to college. This environmental 9 continued

Directions: You are to write in no less than 120 words about the title “My view on private car”. You should base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:

With the living standards rising rapidly, more and more Chinese people have cars of their own. The increase in the number of cars brings about a lot of problems, such as air pollution, noise and traffic congestion. Then a controversy arises: whether private cars should be encouraged in China? People differ in their ideas about it.
Some people think cars have a lot of advantages. In the first place, driving a car saves time. Because competition is very fierce in this society, time equals money. Secondly, people can go shopping o traveling at their spare time.
But, others people suggest that cars are bad for society, such as: cars will increasing air pollution, which will influence our life and production .Meanwhile, cars will make the energy crisis worsen. In addition, with the number of cars growing, plenty of new drivers don’t abide by traffic regulation, which leads to traffic accidents.
In my opinion, we should drive our cars when our work is very busy. Meanwhile, we should reduce driving the car when short distance or having a lot of time. We should properly use modern traffic facility, only then our life will colorful.
