　　1 One man's meat is another man's poison.这是英语的⼀句谚语，意思是“对⼀⽅有利的未必对另⼀⽅也有利”。有时可译作“各有所爱”同时也有汉语俗语“萝⼘青菜各有所爱”的意思。

　　2 would turn at the idea of… turn此处作“恶⼼”、“作呕”解。at the idea of…是“想到…”的意思。

　　3 to be brought up，养育，抚养。stick to有“坚持”的意思。

　　4 Cooked in wine, snails...⽤酒烹调的蜗⽜...这是过去分词作状语。表⽰条件。

　　5 I happened to be walking in the garden.我碰巧在花园⾥散步。happen后⾯加不定式表⽰\"碰巧做...\"

　　6 take(亦作have) possession of,是“占有”、“拥有”的意思。

　　1 A skeleton in the cupboard，直译为“柜中骸骸”，此系⼀成语作“家丑”解释。

　　2 conceal sth from sb.作“对某⼈隐瞒某事”解说。

　　4 to varying degrees，在不同程度上。

　　5 stood in front of it petrified，站在柜前吓呆了。

　　stand此处表⽰处于某种状态，起系动词的作⽤，后⾯常接形容词、介词短语或过去分词，表⽰主语处于某种状态中的特征，可视作表语。

　　6 the impression that it was about to leap out...，that引导的从句作impression的同位语。be about to do sth，表⽰按照计划即将做的动作。

　　1 Cutty Sark,“卡蒂萨克”号，19世纪⼀艘的帆船。现在这艘船在伦敦格林威治作为展品被保护了起来。在轮船时代以前，它是那时侯最快的帆船。

　　也可写成both of these ships 或 both ships。

　　3 The first of the two ships to reach Java ...,两艘船中⾸先到达⽖哇的···。不定式短语to reach Java此处作定语，修饰first。中间被另⼀个修饰fi rst的介词短语of the two ships所分开。

　　lose one's lead，失去其地位。

　　5 There is no doubt that if she had not lost her rudder she would have won the race easily毫⽆疑间，如果中途没有失去舵，“卡蒂萨克”号肯定能在⽐赛中轻易夺冠。这是⼀个虚拟语⽓的句⼦，是对过去的⼀种假设。

　　没有⼈能避免受⼴告的影响。

　　avoid⼀词需接动名词作宾语，being influenced是动名词⼀般式的被动形式

　　2 Much as we may pride ourselves...，尽管我们可以⾃夸……，虽然我们可以为...⽽感到⾃豪。

　　这是⼀个让步状语从句，连词much as可以译成\"虽然很...\"

　　3 get something for nothing，免费得到。

　　4 go wrong，出差错，出⽑病。

　　5 the response to this competition，对这⼀竞赛的反响。
